What is Travel Insurance and How Does it Work?

Many of us set off to holiday happily without taking up a travel insurance. However, we are unable to predict the what-ifs, and we will not want to turn our holiday into a nightmare if anything ever happens to us. Travel insurance helps to get everything taken care of if anything unlucky happened.

A typical travel insurance in Singapore generally cover and protect you from any risk while you are travelling the world. It includes personal accident coverage, medical coverage, loss of personal items, trip modifications, travel delays and travel inconvenience.

The Basics of Travel Insurance

A typical travel insurance usually consists of three major coverage:

  • Personal accident coverage:
This is probably the main reason to acquire a travel insurance for most of the people. It covers any personal accidents like injury, disablement, or even death. Some insurance will also cover child education grant that will help raise your children if you happened to passed away or get disabled while on trip.
  • Medical coverage:
Medical coverage is another main feature of a travel insurance, that covers the costs of medical expenses may incur from getting injured or ill during the trip. It usually includes medical emergency, emergency evacuation, hospital visitation or even repatriation expenses depending on your optional coverage.
  • Travel inconvenience coverage:
Travel inconvenience coverage covers things that may cause a disruption to your travel plan. Typical coverage includes trip cancellation and curtailment, personal property and baggage damage, personal liability and more. It will covers unforeseen events and expenses that is beyond your plans and expectation.
  • Should I pick an annual or single policy?

Annual travel insurance will work out to be cheaper for you if you are a frequent traveler. it is common for the coverage period to be limited to 31 days of consecutive travel per trip.

    The number of trips per year is usually not limited as long as you return within the number of days specified by the insurer. There are also some insurers that offer extended periods of travel up to 60 days, though this will be only available at an additional cost. In short;

  • Single Trip:
Travel insurance that covers for a single trip that originates and ends in Singapore.
  • Annual Policy:
Insurance that covers for all trips starting and ending in Singapore. Each trip should be less than 180 days.
  • However, if you are not a frequent traveller, we would suggest you to take a single policy instead. In both cases, it is wise to compare policies and make sure that you are getting the best coverage at the best possible price.

Can I Buy Travel Insurance Once I am Overseas?

No. You need to make a purchase before your trip commences. You are advised to buy travel insurance after you’ve purchased your tickets as it will protect you from trip cancellation.

How Does Travel Insurance Policies Differ?

The basic coverage provided by most travel insurers in Singapore is lost or delayed luggage, coverage for personal liability, cancellation or delays of flights, medical treatment while you are away, and unforeseen circumstances like accidental death or injury while travelling.

The most distinctive difference between insurers and the packages they offer are the value of coverage and services provided. Determine the type of coverage you need most, and make sure that the insurance policy that you choose provides the coverage you are looking for.
